Being busy for work, I have not posted anything in the blog for sometime! Time to link in some updates from the website. Sports from kids' football, volleyball, rally on saving Dix Hospital, to a trip to CA for work have happened since September 17th!

African-American Cultural Festival

AZ immigration protest in Downtown Raleigh

After work and very late in the afternoon, I went downtown to check out an anti-AZ-SB1070 protest march in Downtown Raleigh. About 150-200 people marched from Nash Square to the Wake Co Jail, then to the nearby courthouse, and finally to the Old State Capitol for some speeches and final rallying to voice protest to the AZ law.

NC Pro-AM basketball 7-15-10

Have not blogged in a while due to not much going on but finally back! Wedding images are coming soon!

I went to Durham on July 15th to photograph a couple of the NC pro-Am games held at NC Central's gym. Went in the previous week, july 8th, to learn about it and to attempt to learn and possibly light the gym for photos. Came back on the 15th with my assistant and here are the results:

AAU Basketball 5-2-10

Over the weekend, I covered one of the Championship games from the AAU tournament held at the Garner Road YMCA on May 2nd. Could not place/correct my light properly due to the crowds, and dealing with admins who did not understand remote strobes, but came out OK in the end. WCBA, pictured above, won the 14U, 77-73.

First baseball of the year!

After shooting so much basketball, I attended the Shaw-Kutztown State baseball match-up in Raleigh . I attended the first game and Shaw fell behind early and could not recover and lost the doubleheader with a 13-5 and 11-6 score.

The St. Augustine Falcons in Raleigh NC compiled an impressive 26-4 record and won the 2010 CIAA Basketball title in Charlotte on February 27th!

I covered St Aug. College vs Chowan Univ. basketball games last night, 2-4-10, for The Carolinian. St. Aug swept both games and as of today are at the top of their division in the CIAA.

NC State vs NC Central

I'm a State graduate and had a chance to shoot NC State vs NC Central at the RBC Center on January 30th for The Carolinian. Roads were bad due to the snow storm but managed to make it in. State won 77-42. Was there to follow Central but exciting to be in press row that afternoon.

I knew NC Central head Coach Levelle Moton when he was a kid at the Wake County Boys Club back in the early-mid 1980s (!) and happy to see he is doing well professionaly.

It has been a while since I could post here but, finally, basketball season is back! Shaw and St Aug kick off the season and are doing fine. As of today, Shaw men are undefeated and St Aug men have lost only one. The lady teams are not fairing well.

it has been a while since posting sue to a wedding and some other events but now back to posting. St Augustine's College played Livingstone for their homecoming and ended up winning 31-17. Great photo conditions and was happy with the results.

I went to Fayetteville NC to cover the Shaw-Fayetteville State Game for The Carolinian. Weather was overcast with a chance for rain which made for nice flat lighting,. Close game and FayState ame away with a 29-28 victory.

St. Aug vs. Va State

The VA State Trojans came to town on Sept. 19th to take on St. Augustine's college. Sort of a slow start with no real movement in the St Aug offense but after the passing game kicked in, St. Aug rolled onto a 27-14 victory. Shot with a pair of Canon EOS 1D Bodies and a Nikon D1H (!) digital camera on a 300/2.8 AF-I lens.

On September 13th, I accepted the monetary award for having an image which is BEST in SHOW at the 2009 NC Biennial Photographers Exhibition at Meredith College. Entering it, I did not expect to win but wanted an image displayed. After trying for many years, success came and darn proud of the outcome. The exhibition runs until November 1st.

Raleigh Adult Bball league Championships

On August 5th, the Adult League Championships were held at St. Aug 's Gym in Raleigh. The Phase II Warriors won a tough contest with a 107-105 score. Another season done in the Chavis league and I'm ready for football to start on August 29th. Two games in one day but can do it!

Railhawks soccer

On August first, I went to cover the Railhawks -Austin Aztex game in Cary for The Carolinian. Images are not too bad and marked the first time using the D2Hs at 1600. Worked great and much better than the D2h body. Cameras used here are the EOS 1D and the D2Hs.

Russell Blunt East Coast Invitational

It has been a while posting here and have something different; track and field. The Russell Blunt East Coast Invitational was held at Duke University's Wallace Wade Stadium, in Durham NC, from July 24-26. Went as part of work for The Carolinian and was not too bad. HOT outside but all went well.

Summer League basketball is finally here. The Raleigh Chavis basketball league is one where many college level, some pros, and many wannabe stars come to macth their skills against each other within different teams. Always lots of fun but trying something different in shooting this year to not be affected by fans walking by.

I went to the first half of the Railhawks-Timbers game in Cary for The Carolinian. Storms were coming and had no desire to be a lightning rod and left. Images were OK but have to work out issues with the noise reduction. Still good to publish!

North Carolina Special Olympics

I volunteered as a photographer again for NC Special Olympics, this makes year 10(!), over the weekend of June 6th and 7th. Was lots of fun and shot gymnastics, softball and aquatics in their summer games. Now, have to get the remaining pictures back to NCSO as they use them in future publications. Edgar Huff

Shaw University Senior and baseball pitcher Edgar Huff was injured in a car accident days before graduation. Players in non-revenue sports , many times in Div II schools, do not receive the praise and attention as football and basketball players receive but work just as hard. For edgar, I plan to send him a few prints from his career, images I shot, at Shaw.

I went to cover the Mudcats playing the Jacksonville Suns at Five County Stadium on 5-18. Finally got a decent shot of sliding at home plate from a high angle and pleased with the images from that night.

Tail of the Dragon-US 129; 318 curves in 11 miles!

I took a break and went to Graham County (Robbinsville), NC to get some mtn. bike and motorcycle riding in. Rained on the mtn. bike day and ended up shooting the bikes rounding the curves on US 129. It is 318 curves in 11 miles from Deals gap, NC to Tennessee. There are guys who do this shooting for a living but my pics are not too bad!

Railhawks Soccer 5-9-09

On the night of May 9th, and after two graduations, I covered Carolina Railhawks' soccer and was okay shooting. A big rain delay did not help but images came out fine but may need longer glass to shoot downfield as a 300mm is not quite enough! The Canon EOS 1D & 1DMk2-N worked like a charm in low light

I covered college graduations for The Carolinian , two in one day plus a soccer game, and was difficult but managed. Shaw and St. Augustine's College had their events in two locations not too far from each other. Met Corey Lowenstein from the News & Observer at St. Aug ( thanks to her for getting us in and creating 'media parking!).

Carolina vs Chattanooga

I was out Friday night, May 1st, at the Carolina Mudcats game where they took on the Chattanooga Lookouts. Game images are OK but missed a crucial score due to a missed manual focus..........or I moved in excitement. Anyway, here are some of the images shot for The Carolinian.

I'm still not the greatest of shooters but manage to get some great shots at times . I need to work on the homepage and point my domain towards smugmug. I'm still more of a sports-news person but love the chance to go shoot other things at times. I shot product shots of t-shirts for a friend of mine Sunday morning in Downtown Raleigh. Used a light ( trying my strobist bit!) and came out OK. I still need to learn more about lighting but here are some results from that morning!

Mudcats Baseball

On April 24th, I went to cover the Carolina Mudcats for The Carolinian at Five County Stadium in Eastern Wake County. My first semi-pro baseball game of the season and first game in six weeks. Night shooting is tricky and trying to get a method which works. The big 300mm 2.8 AF-I and D2X were suprisingly good even at ASA 1600! Other shots with a Canon 1D Mk2N and a 300/4L up to ASA 3200.

Drag racing

This is an old photo, from 2006, from my time shooting drag racing. Ironcially, minutes after I left this spot, a halfshaft from a Chevy S10 flew into this spot and would have taken my head off! This was shot with a Canon 20D at ASA 1600, 20-35 2.8l lens

Tennis by Ektachrome?

With the heavy use of digital for press these days, many do not remember the use of slides for getting the best color for print magazines. Just for kicks, I shot part of a tournament with Kodak Extra Color 100 with a Nikon F5 and an AF-I 300 2.8. It's a different look but I like the colors.

Tennis Championship Day

Two teams fought it out against SC State for the MEC tennis championship on April 19th with SCSU winning both mens and women's 2009 MEAC tennis conference champions. Shooting was easier this day due to nice flat lighting. The best way to have an effective tennis photo is to have the ball in the photo. It's difficult to shoot tight and have the perfect shot as players swing and move. Also, not blasting away with the motor drive as it gives extra work once you get home. Understand the sport and you can shoot less frames with better results.

I went to cover college tennis yesterday for The Carolinian. Not too bad shooting as I tried using a BIG Nikon 300mm from upstairs to shoot the court. Also a 70-200 2.8 L Canon lens on a 1DMk2N on court level. Watching the players can give a basic lesson on how to play the game; keeping your eye on the ball!

TEA Party in Raleigh

With April 15th being associated with Fed tax deadline, many took to the streets to protest the proposed multi-trillion dollar budget stating their opposition. Across the nation, thousands of people protested with TEA ( taxed enough Already) rallys. I have my own opinions but won't express them here. However, I have posted some images from the first rally in Downtown Raleigh at the old Capitol building.

With UNC-Chapel Hill in the hunt for the national basketball championship (much to the dismay of NCSU fans) I ended up at the NCAA Gymnastics Southeast regional finals at Reynolds Colesuem in Raleigh NC on April 4th. While I have never shot gymnastics before, images came out not too bad. I went as part of work for The Carolinian with some images published on 4/9/09. Unfortunately, many of the non-revenue sports do not receive the attention as basketball and football but the athletes work hard to master their sport.

I did a favor for a friend who needed some images of models in t-shirts she designed. While I'm more inclined to news & sports, this is something different and gave it a try. Lighting the gazebo was not too hard ( thank you, strobist!) but shooting in the sun was a small challenge. Images were shot at the J.C. Ralston Arboretum of NC State in Raleigh.

On April 11, I went to shoot a Carolina Railhawks game for The Carolinian. I'm new at shooting soccer but did my best. It seems I am doing more sports than regular events of late but still quite competent in shooting whatever is needed.

I went to cover St. Aug and Shaw's progress at the 2009 Raleigh relays for The Carolinian. Shots are not too bad but left before the heavens opened up around 3pm. Paper is happy and so am I.

It has been sometime since I posted due to work and other matters but have some new updates. I completed a poster for a lady whose grandson plays for JC Smith. I rarely make these but took a shot at it and the results are not too bad!

Men's 2009 CIAA Finals

Basketball is done but here's the last of the images from the season. Johnson C. Smith from Charlotte NC took on VA Union from Richmond VA for the championship. JC Smith defeated Union ( score escapes me for the moment). Shooting the game was fine BUT the bad listings for press from the CIAA shouted favoritism somewhat! one thing I learned one can actually shoot with a 300 at F4 (!) indoors!

Basketball season is over, thank goodness, and time to move onto baseball. Shaw took on Alderson-Broaddus from Phillipi, WVa in Raleigh's Lions Park on 3/08 and lost 15-3.

CIAA Basketball

ON Feb 27 and 28th, I traveled to Charlotte for the CIAA Basketball Championships held in the Time-Warner Arena ( where the Bobcats play). Shot on Friday night to cover the St Augustine Falcons vs Va Union in a semi-final matchup. VUU won 57-54 in a close game and met JC Smith in the finals on 2-27.

On Feb. 19th, I covered the Shaw-UDC games in Spaulding gym for The Carolinian which ends the regular season games for any of the CIAA/NCAA Div-II teams. The CIAA kicks off this week and concludes on Saturday with the mens' and womens' finals.
Shaw Men won 101-57 but the ladies lost a tough one 75-71.

I shot this in 2003 with my old Canon D30 (not 30D) 3.1MP camera. Was getting a haircut in Nicholson's Barber Shop in August and saw the barber and the child's dad struggling with him in the chair. I left the shop, grabbed my camera from the Jeep and shot several frames. I learned later that was his second haircut ever!

I went to cover the HK on J for The Carolinian on Valentine's Day. The day is close to the 100th anniversary to the founding of the NAACP in Illinois in 1909. the march is by the NAACP to present 14 points to the NC Legislature for ideal they feel are important to NC.

Very late posting of images but these couple are from an indoor track meet at UNC-Chapel Hill on January 24th. Shot with a Canon 1DMk2. Works OK, great with ASA 1600 & 3200 but horrid on tracking. I have a pair of EOS 1D Mk1 bodies and they track faster! Go figure.

Here are images from St. Augustine's College vs . Elizabeth City State University. Unlike Shaw, the building is brighter but does not have the warm glow coming from the floor. Light has to be set properly to get the best look to appear natural. Some shooters in these gyms feel just flooding the arena with light gets it done. Setting it to darken the background but illuminiating the subjects has an interesting look.

I'm still new at trying to keep up with this blog but making an effort at it. I sometimes shoot D2 basketball here in Raleigh and lighting the gyms is a challenge. It may look bright to the human eye but a camera sees it differently. The major newspaper in my area seems to have issues in shooting there but its not that bad!

Look at the top two images and see what properly set lighting can do. Look at the lower image without lighting and it does not have that "pop" to make it stand out (my opinion). Unless one is in a major arean with excellent lighting, shooting without extra lighting is a mistake.

It's Tuesday morn' and want to update. Purchased a Nikon Coolscan 8000 scanner and scanned some 10 yr old slides from Charleston and Cape Hatteras before the lighthouse move. Also, the Currituck light from 1998.

Hi, I am Steven Worthy and a photographer living in the Raleigh NC area. I shoot sports for The Carolinian as well as other free-lance events or my own projects. Not the best of photogs but spend time learning the technical side of the art which helps me somewhat. I shot sports for Shaw University and you can see some samples of the work here.

I will update and post some of my work here from time to time. Feel free to post comments!
